Herbert William Allen was born on 1 October 1887 in Maylands, South Australia. Prior to his enlistment into the military, Herbert worked as a cabinet maker. There is no record of any previous military service listed on his enlistment documents, indicating that World War I was likely his first experience in the armed forces. . Herbert's father, William Allen, and his mother, Frances Priscilla Budge, were both 31 years old when he was born. Herbert was the second oldest among his six siblings. Allen was married to Ethel Elizabeth Allen when he enlisted

Upon enlisting on the 30 June 1915 under service number 3196, Herbert was 27 years and 8 months old, weighed 170 lbs, stood 5 feet 8 inches tall and was a Baptist. He was described as having a fresh complexion with brown eyes and dark brown hair. He joined the 10th Australian Infantry Battalion as a Priate

Herbert William Allen departed from Adelaide on 14 September 1915 on board HMAT A70 Ballarat, joining the 10th Infantry Battalion, During his service, Herbert faced several health issues. He was admitted to No. 1 Australian Stationary Hospital on 29 January 1916 for appendicitis and again on 20 March 1916 for bronchopneumonia and heart trouble, before being discharged back to duty on 4 April 1916.

Herbert then went overseas to France on 14 November 1916, likely leaving from Southampton and arriving via Étaples. On 25 January 1918, Herbert was wounded in action, suffering a gunshot wound to his left upper arm, and was admitted to the 9th Canadian Military Hospital on 29 January 1918. D

Herbert returned to Australia departing England in April 1919. After returning from the war, Herbert William Allen resumed his life in Australia with his wife, Ethel Elizabeth Jones. Together, they had at least one son, John Herbert Allen,

Herbert enlisted for World War 2 on the 24 July 1940 at Wayville, SA. His service number was S289 and his rank was Staff Sargant in the 3 Infantry Training Battalion. He served until discharged on 7 September 1942.

Herbert lived a long life, passing away at the age of 88 from natural causes. He was buried at Nambour Garden Cemetery in Queensland.
