71 years ago today, on the Saturday morning of the 3rd July 1954, Corporal Michael Musgrove, 20th Battalion (Reg No- 503A), miner from Turton Road, Waratah, New South Wales and Georgetown Road, Waratah, N.S.W. and 13 Dawson Street, Waratah, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 77. CATHOLIC 1-05. 86.
Note - headstone inscription incorrectly states DIED 21st July 1954. Should be 2nd July 1954.
Born at Lambton, New South Wales on the 1st September 1876 to Joseph G, died 6.1.1894, Wickham, N.S.W., age?, buried at ANGLICAN 1-28. 66, from Hannell Street, Wickham, N.S.W., and Elizabeth Musgrove, died 26.6.1922, Kurri Kurri, N.S.W., age 75, sleeping at ANGLICAN 1-28. 66, from William Street, Abermain, N.S.W.; husband of Mary Ann Musgrove nee Marsh, married 1907, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 26.7.1948?, age 73 as Anne, sleeping here, from Abermain, New South Wales, Mick enlisted on the 6th January 1916 with the 34th Battalion at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 23.6.1916.
Transferred to 20th Battalion 7.10.1916, Reg No-503A.
Admitted to hospital 19.11.1916 (sciatica), 19.1.1917 (scabies), 4.2.1917 (gastric enteritis), 10.2.1917 (appendicitis).
Granted furlough in England from 26.3.1917 to 10.4.1917 and 9.10.1918 to 27.10.1918.
Promoted Corporal in France 1.11.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 20.5.1919.
Mick arrived home on the 4th July 1919, being discharged on the 19th August 1919.
Mr. Musgrove’s name has been inscribed on the Abermain War Memorial.
I have placed poppies at Mick’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Not officially commemorated.
