Prior to coming to Australia James had served with the Territiorial Artillery, England.

Between 6 June 1919 and 6 September 1919 he was granted leave to study agriculture with A. Callender of Stithill, Kelso, Scotland. 

Commenced return to Australia on 5 November 1919 aboard HT Ypringa disembarking on 9 January 1920
