Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Military Medal

'This man acted as a Stretcher Bearer during the operations of MT. ST. QUENTIN near PERONNE on September 1st, 1918, and acted in a conspicuously fearless manner. With utter contempt of machine gun fire and shell fire which were at all times very severe he continued his work of caring for the wounded for 20 hours almost incessantly. His devotion for duty was of a very high order and he undoubtedly saved many lives. ASHLEY also came under notice for his splendid work at DOMPIERRE August 28th. Here his Company was forced to temporarily withdraw, leaving casualties behind. ASHLEY volunteered his services, and went out through the heaviest Machine Gun fire to the aid of these men, and having dressed their wounds, carried them back to safety.'
