27 Oct 1916: Honoured Military Medal, During the Lone Pine engagement at ANZAC he was employed as a linesman for a 4'7" gun. Lines to the observation being repeatedly cut by enemy fire and Oakes was out during most of afternoon and evening of the 6 August repairing them, mostly under heavy shrapnel fire.
