Add my storyBiography contributed by Tracey Hoffrichter
Herbert Arthur Green was a seaman with the British Navy from the 29th of July, 1907 until March 1914, when he deserted. The last ship he served on was the Southampton. Herbert then joined the Australian Army in September the same year, under the name Arthur Prince.
Researching Herbert's story has been something of an adventure. His sister was my husband's Grandfather's first wife, Dorothy, whom Herbert cites as his cousin on his enlistment record. Our journey with Herbert began when we found some medals in a box of things belonging to Dorothy, after my husband's parents died. We wondered who this Arthur Prince might be, and why Dorothy had his medals.
Herbert must have been a bit of character with a sense of humour, considering he wrote 'circus performer' as his occupation! He also caused quite a lot of paperwork for the military after his death, as they sent out medals under his alias, and had to send a second set to his sister in the correct name. The first set were supposed to have been returned. In between time, Dorothy migrated from England to Australia and married. What happened to the second set of medals is unsure, though we believe they may have ended up with family in the UK.
What made Herbert enlist in the AIF is a mystery, though he may have been avoiding being caught for desertion!
