Albert Hynes was born on the 9th of December, 1897 in Rawalpindi, India (now Pakistan) to John and Emily Blanche Hynes (King). He was born into an English military family as his father John was serving at the time in the Dragoons in India as a Lance-Sergeant. Albert’s grandfather Francis served in the army for over twenty years and as a Drill Sergeant in the Lancaster Rifle Volunteers.

Albert was the oldest boy of six children, four boys and two girls. The family emigrated to Australia in June 1913 and moved to Tongala where they had a farm. He joined the AIF on the 13th of November, 1914 which was just before he turned 17. Albert boarded the HMAT Runic in February 1915. He was at Gallipoli from the 2nd of May, 1915 until the 16th of May, 1915 in the 2nd Reinforcements and Coy Div Train (logistical support and supplies) and his Service Number was 5429.

On the 14th of August, 1915, Albert embarked to return to Australia and arrived in February 1916 on the HMAT Port Lincoln. He signed up again at 18 on the 1st of March, 1916 and was given Service Number 9729. He returned to Egypt on the HMAT Anchises on the 14th of March, 1916 and served in the 12th Brigade, Ammunition. Albert returned to Australia 27th June 1919 on the HMAS Borda was discharged from the AIF on the 7th March 1924. Albert’s younger brother, Harold also joined the AIF and also returned to Australia.

In 1940, Albert married Veronica McLeod and had two children called Denise and Patricia. They lived in Spotswood. Albert worked as a boiler attendant for the Footscray hospital and had to end his career at 67 because he wouldn’t diverge his age. At 67 he went to Royal Melbourne Technical College and excelled in a course in Refrigeration.

He was about 70 when he got his driver’s licence and rode a motor scooter before he got his licence. On the 9th of May, 1970, Albert died of a heart attack at 72.
