Roland Romany Wickham
Also known as Ronald Ramsay (& Rowland Romney) Care–Wickham
He was born in Carlton VIC on 22 Sep 1889 to John Carewickham & Eliza Jane McArthur
At age 23 he was working as a Labourer when he enlisted in the AIF in Melbourne on 7 Dec 1914 & was allocated as 1621 TPR with 3rd Light Horse Regiment, 3rd Reinforcement
He embarked on 29 Jan 1915, disembarking in Egypt on 8 Mar where he joined C Squadron
It is unclear if he served at Gallipoli when they arrived there in May, though in Jul he returned to Australia, subsequently being discharged medically unfit in Nov 1915
He re–attested for home service on 20 May 1916 & was allocated as 54688 PTE with the 3rd Military District, Domain Camp Guard in Melbourne
He discharged on 21 Sep 1916 to re–enlist in the AIF, subsequently being allocated to the 13th Light Horse Reinforcement as 2035 Trooper until being discharged again medically unfit on 13 Nov 1616
He again re–attested for home service on 18 Jan 1917 & was again allocated to the 3rd Military District, Domain Camp Guard in Melbourne
He discharged for the final time on 13 Feb 1917 at his own request
With the outbreak of WW2 he again enlisted in the forces on 9 Oct 1939 & was allocated as V81282 PTE with the 3rd Military District Employment Company
He subsequently served with 2/14 Training Battalion; 2/21st Trng Bn & 6th Trng Bn until discharging on 8 Apr 1941 with the rank of S/SGT
On 4 Jun 1941 he enlisted in the RAAF at the age of 51 (claiming to be 44) & was allocated as 40946 AC for service as a Mess Steward
Following initial training he served with No.7 Squadron; No.1 OUT; No.1 Convalescent Depot & RAAF Station Ascot Vale until discharging on compassionate grounds as LAC on 5 Oct 1943
Roland passed away at age 73/74 in 1962 in Bright, Alpine Shire, Victoria & was interred at Bright Cemetery, Sect. 2 Block B Lot 77
