Norman was the eldest of four children of Victor William MacKenzie Snr (b1897 in Ipswich, QLD) and Rita Mildred Blake (b1898 in Ipswich, QLD). William - a Labourer - and Rita married in 1917 in Ipswich, QLD. They settled at Rosewood on the Darling Downs in QLD where they raised their family and William worked as a Farm Labourer and then Farmer. In the mid 1930s William and Rita relocated with their children to ipswich, where William was a Labourer. By the early 1940s they had moved to Hendra in Brisbane where William was a Labourer. William's brother David John (Private; Service No:457) was KiA in France in 1916.
Norman was an unemployed Despatch Clerk in November 1938 when he enlisted in the Militia (Private; Service No:Q27918). He was attached to 61 Battalion when he was Discharged in February 1941 to enlist in the RAAF. Norman served as a Leading Aircraftman, Corporal and Sergeant (Service No:25488) with 32 Squadron, 24 Squadron, 66 Squadron and 29 Air Stores Park. In February 1946 he volunteered to serve an additional two years with Citizen Air Force at RAAF Base Port Moresby, and was Discharged in March 1948. Brother Victor William (Gunner; Service Nos:QX44974/Q11458) and cousins John Henry (Service No:QX50717), William (Service No:QX39561) and Leslie raymond (Service Nos:QX50935/Q11319) also served in WWII.
Returning to Brisbane, QLD Norman lived in Kedron with his father and siblings, and worked as a Grocer's Assistant. In 1952 he married Margaret Hennessy (b1930 in Goodna, QLD). Norman and Margaret settled in Kedron, where Norman worked as a Grocer's Assistant, Agent and Storeman. Norman died in 1988 and Margaret in 2014.
