Francis Mulready enlisted in July 1916, at the age of 14 years and 3 Months. He stated on enlistment that he was 18 years and 1 month but he was born on Empire Day, 24 May 1902.
His older brother, Maurice Mulready had also enlisted in November 1914, at the age of 15 years and 6 months.
Their mother had passed away during 1907, and their father was an old soldier, an officer working in the pay and recruiting office of the Australian Army, and he was working at recruiting in Inverell, NSW at the time of their enlistment.
Francis was a trumpeter or bugler, and posted to the 6th Light Horse Brigade. He left Sydney for Suez, in Egypt, during February 1917. He was transferred to the 7th Light Horse Regiment Details during April 1917. He was transferred to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment during May 1917. He was eventually sent home to Australia on 25 September 1919, still only 17 years of age.
