Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

106 years ago today, on the 28th October 1918, Private George Stanley Mann, referred to as Stanley, 30th Battalion (Reg No-2097), railway fettler (Railway Department, Port Waratah, N.S.W.), from Little Denison Street, Carrington, New South Wales, Died of Wounds received at the Battle of Amiens, age-25.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.

Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 27th February 1893 to Thomas William (died 17.6.1934, 29 Edward Street, Arncliffe, N.S.W., age 83), and Amy Louisa Mann nee Richardson (died 11.11.1931, 34 Ranclaud Street, Merewether, N.S.W., age 75), Stan enlisted on the 18th September 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on the 16th February 1916.
Wounded in action - 20.7.1916 (bayonet wound right hand, Battle of Fromelles), 8.8.1918 (GSW head, Battle of Amiens).

There is a report of a letter sent home from Private Webber Jones, dated the 3rd August 1916, mentions that Stan had been wounded. Private Jones, 30th Battalion, Reg No. 448, coal trimmer from Little Young Street, Carrington, New South Wales, was killed by enemy artillery shell, Flers, France, age 28. Resting at AIF Burial Ground, Flers, France. Plot IX Row B Grave 4. Memorialised at parent's gravesite, ANGLICAN 1-30. 56.

Embarked for England 18.9.1918.

Mr. Mann is resting at Llanelly (St Ellyw) Churchyard, No 2 Extension, Wales, United Kingdom. (South Wales non-conformist gravesite).

Over 1000 towns-people attended the funeral.

Place of Association - Carrington, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Stan’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates, Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor, Carrington Football Club Roll of Honor, Tighes Hill Methodist Church Roll of Honour, Tighes Hill Public School Honor Roll, Carrington Methodist Church Roll of Honour, Carrington M.U.I.O.O.F. Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Port Waratah Locomotive Depot Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised Mann gravesite in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of their son for God, King & Country. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) B NW. 52.
