He was the son of William and Emma J. Odam of 49 Raleigh St., Nottingham, England.

1901 census: parents and William (8) and Harry (5, born about 1896) living at 7 Sandringham Terrace, Nottingham,

1911 census: 44 Bangor Street, Alfred Street, Nottingham; parents with William, [he also served in the Great War] Harry, Albert Edward (9) and Alice Mary (5).

He attended All Saints (Raleigh Street) Day and Sunday Schools and was a member of the 10th Nottingham (All Saints) Boys Brigade.

Harry departed London for Melbourne, Australia, aboard SS Geelong (P&O) on 28 August 1913. The passenger list gives his age as 18 and trade as 'lace worker'.

Harry enlisted at Melbourne on 25th June 1915 and landed at Suez on 7th December 1915. Taken on strength of 5th Pioneer Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, on 3rd March 1916, he embarked at Alexandria for Marseilles on 19th June 1916, arriving on 25th June 1916. Though a burial is recorded in his service record, the grave was lost and he is therefore commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial.

Nottingham Post obituary (abridged) 18 Nov 1916: ODAM killed in action October 24th 1916, Private Harry Odam, Australian Imperial Force, age 21, son of Mr and Mrs Odam, brother of Eddie and Alice, also Will (France), 49 Raleigh Street.
