Gunner Reginald John Matthews (Service Nos:166/2591) enlisted in the AIF on 7 January 1915 and embarked as a Trooper from Sydney for Gallipoli with 12th Light Horse Regiment on board HMAT Suevic A29 on 12 May 1915. At Gallipoli Penisula, Trooper Matthews transferred to 1st Light Horse Regiment on 28 September 1915, and on 17 January 1916 in Cairo transferred as Gunner to 1st Divisional Ammunition Column. Gunner Matthews served in France before embarking from Devonport for the RTA on 23 March 1919 on board HT Cluny Castle. Gunner Matthews was Discharged on 22 July 1919.

Born in 1890 in Goulburn NSW, Reg was the seventh of nine children of William Matthews (b1851 in Gloucestershire, England) and Mary Jane Mulholland (b1853 in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland). William immigrated in 1858, arriving in Sydney NSW with his parents and siblings on board the Golconda, and Mary arrived in 1862 with her parents and siblings on board the Ocean Princess. William (an Engine Stoker) and Mary married in 1877 in Picton, NSW and settled at Goulburn where they raised their family and William worked as an Engine Driver until his death in 1913 (he died as a result of injuries from falling from the engine he was driving).

Reg worked as a Farmer in Goulburn, NSW prior to enlistment in the AIF. He was a Railway Worker in 1921 in Scone, NSW when he married Emily May Hegarty (b1898 in Scone, NSW). Reg and Emily settled in Goulburn, NSW where they raised their family and Reg was a Railway Worker. Reg died in 1962 and Emily in 1995.
