Son of Dennis Stephen O'Brien and Elizabeth O'Brien of Godfrey Street, Lakemba, NSW

Served his tailor apprenticeship with E. Howes of Auder Street, Sydney, NSW

Commenced return to Australia on 24 July 1919 aboard HT Bakara. At Durban on 4 September 1919 Eugene was transferred to HT Bahia Castillo, for armed guard duties, disembarking on 21 October 1919

During 1923c Eugene married Dorothy Mignon Keating in Sydney
