Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Gustaf Enrick Tornquist was 27 years of age when he enlisted at Blackboy Hill in Western Australia during June 1915. He was born at Mintaro in South Australia, his father having been born in Sweden. The family name was often misspelt Tornquest and Tonquest.

Gustav's younger brother, 353 Private Charles Albert Tornquist (served as Tonquest) 3rd Light Horse Regiment AIF, died of wounds in Egypt on 1 June 1916, age 22.

An older brother 3939 Corporal Frederick William Tornquist M.M. 48th Battalion AIF was decorated for capturing 3 Germans whilst out alone on a patrol.

According to his witnesses in his Red Cross file, Gustaf was badly wounded in both legs at Pozieres by shellfire on the 23 July 1916. He had no burial site. He was posted as missing until a Court of Enquiry held almost 12 months later deemed he had been killed in action. During 1925 his remains were found at Pozieres by the War Graves staff, identified by his disc and pieces of equipment. The disc was returned to his parents and his remains were buried in the Cerisy Gailly Military Cemetery, about 20 kilometers south of Pozieres.
