Biography contributed by Karen Standen

"NON-COM. OFFICER KILLED. EX-RAVENSWOOD RESIDENT.

Sergeant J. H. Hooke, of the 6th Battalion, whose death was reported on Sunday, was a grandson of Mr. J. F. H. Mitchell, the well-known landowner, of Ravenswood. His father is dead, and his mother is now residing with her father at Ravenswood. The deceased sergeant was well known in Bendigo, and was a member of the Bendigo Lawn Tennis Club. He joined the Bendigo branch of the Bank of Australasia, and after remaining there for two years he went to Melbourne. At the time of his enlistment he was an accountant at the head office of the bank in Collins-street, Melbourne. He was 26 years of age, and married Miss Constance Huon the day before he sailed for the front. He joined the Expeditionary Force as a private, and was promoted to the rank of sergeant whilst in Egypt." - from the Bendigonian 06 May 1915 (nla.gov.au)

"SERGEANT'S HOOK'S DEATH.

The following extracts from a letter, from Sergeant D. A. McLean, C Co. 6th Battalion, 2nd Brigade, tell the story of the death of Sergeant John Huon Hooke, who was shot on the day of the landing at Gallipoli. The letter, which was written to Mrs. J. H. Hooke, reads thus :— "I was near your husband when he was hit. We had just got into the firing-line on the first day of landing (April 25), when he was shot through the leg. Bert refused to leave his post. About an hour afterwards he was shot through the head, and remained unconscious from the moment he was hit till he died. Everything that was possible was done for him, but his case was hopeless from the first. Before he was killed, Sergeant Hooke did some very good work, proving himself a very brave man, and a good soldier. We all feel proud that he belonged to our company. During the nine months he was with us he won for himself the esteem and regard of every member of the company, and, believe me, we all regret his death very much." Sergeant John Huon Hooke was married the day before he embarked for Egypt, to Constance Florence Phipps Huon, eldest daughter of the late William Huon, of 'Kerillieau,' and Mrs. Huon, of Kew, Vic. He was the eldest, son of the late Chas. F. Hooke, 'Thurgoona,' Auburn, Vic., and Mrs. Hooke, Ravenswood, and grandson of John F. H. Mitchell, of Ravenshoe, Ravenswood." - from the Albury Banner and Wodonga Express 30 Jul 1915 (nla.gov.au)
