Trooper Edgar Stanley Ackland was awarded the Military Medal for bravery when on the 5 November 1917 he carried a Hotchkiss gun 300 metres over broken ground and opened fire on two enemy gun crews, causing casualties and resulting in the capture of the guns.
His older brother, 5028 Pte. Harold Ackland 6th Battalion AIF was killed in action in Belgium only a week prior, aged 35.
They were the sons of Hugh and Margaret Ackland who spent much of their lives farming in the area of Horsham, Victoria.
