Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Frederick was one of three brothers, two who died during WW1 and one who died during WW2. They were the sons of Walter Herbert and Amy Selina Weiss. Frederick’s Dad was the headmaster of Erina Public School, near Gosford NSW and Frederick was following in his father’s footsteps having been posted as new teacher to West Wyalong NSW.

Frederick enlisted in July 1915 and was given a huge send off from West Wyalong. He had another send off from Erina, and was presented a sheepskin vest, a filled pocket wallet, handkerchiefs and knitted woollen mufflers.

He was only in France for a short time before he was killed in action at Fromelles on 19 July 1916. He simply went missing during the battle, and his death was not confirmed until September 1917.

Frederick’s younger brother, 11147 Acting Bombardier Erle Victor Weiss, 1st Field Artillery Brigade, was later killed in action, 9 August 1918, aged 23.

Another younger brother, who was only 6 years of age when Frederick died, NX36483 Private Harry Blanch Weiss, 2/30 Battalion was taken prisoner of war of the Japanese and died of illness whilst in captivity in Thailand on 30 September 1943, aged 33.
