Biography contributed by Michael Silver

Private Neil Desmond McLeod was the son of Peter and Mary McLoed of Maitland Street, Gunnedah, New South Wales. He was born at Narrabri in December 1896 and educated at Gunnedah Public School.

A postal worker at Redfern, he enlisted in February 1915 and on his arrival in Egypt was sent to Gallipoli, landing in early August with reinforcements for the 20th Battalion. He remained on Gallipoli until the evacuation in December 1915.

Returning to Egypt and after being in camp at Tel-el-Kabir, he was sent to France as a stretcher bearer. In April 1918 he received a severe wound to the face which resulted in his evacuation to England and a period of hospitalisation.

Following recovery from his wound he sought extended leave during 1919 to undertake a telegraphy course at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow. On 25 July 1919 he married Scottish lass, Catherine MacLeod in Glasgow.

The couple returned to Australia in early 1920.

Neil McLeod, late 20th Battalion, AIF died at Newtown in 1951.
