Vernon was the sixth of eight children of John Wesley Bateman (born 1851 in Fremantle WA) and Mary Armstrong (born 1851 at Murray River, Ravenswood, WA). Vernon is descended from the Fremantle Bateman family which arrived in Fremantle in 1830.

Vernon was a Clerk in Fremantle WA when he enlisted in the AIF in November 1915 in Perth WA. He served initialyy as a Private (Service No: 3756) with 36 Depot and progressed to Lance Corporal with 51 Battalion. Following evacuation from France suffering from shell shock in 1916, Vernon requested to revert to Private, serving with AAMC Dtls and then being promoted to Sergeant with AIF Depot. He was Discharged in 1919 and retrurned to Fremantle WA and work as a Clerk.

Vernon's brothers -Horace William, Hubert Pearson and Guy Victor served in WWI. Brother - in - law Henry Kennedy Maley MLA served in the Boer War.

In 1921 Vernon married Dorothy Ruth Hutton (born 1899 in Derby, WA) and was a Hardware Merchant. Vernon and Dorothy raised their family in East Fremantle and Cotesloe, and Vernon served with the ACMF in WWII as a Lance Sergeant (Service No: W66602). Dorothy died in 1970 and Vernon in 1975
