Youngest of three brothers who served in WWI, Private John Emlyn Williams (Service No:3142) enlisted in the AIF at Blackboy Hill with No 17 Depot Coy on 23 July 1915, and was attached to 11th Infantry Battalion on 13 September 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle for Gallipoli on board HMAT A30 Themistocles. Private Williams transferred to 4th Pioneer Battalion on 16 March 1916 at Tel el Kebir, and embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles on 11 June 1916. Private Williams served on the Western Front, embarking from England for Fremantle on 1 May 1919 on board HT China. Private Williams was attached to 4th Pioneer Battalion at Discharge on 24 July 1919.
Emlyn (aka John in his Attestation Papers) was born in Monmouthshire, Wales in 1893, sixth of seven children of William Williams and Margaret Francis, both born 1856 in Monmouthshire, Wales. William and Margaret married in 1875 in Monmouthsire, where they settled and raised their family and William and their sons were Coal Miners/Hewers. In 1909 William immigrated with three of their sons (Ivor remained in Wales), arriving in Fremantle on board the Orsova. Margaret and their daughters followed in 1910, arriving in Fremantle on board the Ormuz. The family settled in Collie, where William was a Miner.
Emlyn worked as a Carter in Collie prior to enlisting in the AIF in 1915, and following his Discharge, returned to Collie where he worked as a Labourer. In 1932 in Collie he married Mary Gardiner (b1891 in Kybelup, Western Australia) - Mary was working as a Housemaid at the Premier Hotel in Collie. Emlyn and Mary settled in Collie, where Emlyn worked as a Miner. Emlyn died in 1967.
