Patrick was born on the 25 June 1891 in Albion Park, south of Wollongong. He was the seventh child of eight born to Patrick and Margaret (Clancy). He was unmarried and living with his parents in their Wollongong home when he enlisted. Like most of his family he was musical, playing the piano, organ and xylophone. His name was added to his parents grave in Wollongong Cemetery
