John Alphonsus Charles McDougall was born in Port McDonnell, South Australia on the 20th of August 1895. His father was John McDougall, and his mother was Mary Ann Hitchcock. John Alphonsus Charles McDougall had brown eyes and brown hair and before the war, he worked as a labourer and was not married.

McDougall enlisted for the army on the 18th of January 1916 in Melbourne, Victoria. On the date of enlistment, he was 20 years and 4 months old. A description of Dougall on enlistment was his height, 5,7 his chest measurements were 34-36 inches, and his religious background was Roman Catholic. John Alphonsus Charles McDougall also wrote on his enlistment forms that his next of kin was, his Father John McDougall. He later embarked on the very same year on the 16th of August. The location of his embarkment was also in Melbourne, Victoria on the ship, RMS Orontes.

On the embarkment to war, McDougall was a Private with the 10th Infantry Brigade, 37th Infantry Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement. Then on the 14th of October 1916, he was transferred to the 8th Battalion. On the 11th of November, he was then transferred back to the 37th Battalion. He then proceeded to France from Folkestone serving with the 5th Battalion for the remainder of the war. He was discharged on the 13th of August 1919

After the war McDougall returned to Australia. For his efforts in the war, McDougall was awarded two medals, one British War Medal and one Victory Medal. He was awarded these medals on the 4th of December 1923.  John Alphonsus Charles McDougall died on the 30th of June 1948 to natural causes in his hometown, Port McDonnell, South Australia.
