William was described as 41 years 6 mths of age, 5’ 10” tall, 153.5 lbs; fair complexion, grey eyes, dark brown hair and Anglican.

 

14/01/1916      enlisted into WWI in Perth, Western Australia
                        as a Private with 2nd reinforcement, 51st Battalion

17/04/1916      embarked onboard HMAT A60 Aeneas as a Private with the 51st Battalion

6/6/1916          embarked onboard HMTS Franconia, ex Alexandria

16/6/1916        disembarked into Plymouth, England

24/07/1916      embarked overseas to France

3/9/1916          wounded in action in France – gunshot wound to thigh

26/10/1916      rejoined unit in the field France

26/12/1916      embarked onboard HS Carisbrook Castle for England, ill with trench feet

9/2/1917          discharged from 1st Birmingham War Hospital for leave

24/2/1917        reported to Berham Downs, England

2/3/1917          marched in to No.2 Command Depot, Weymouth

22/07/1917      embarked onboard HT Nestor to return to Australia for Home Service

12/09/1917      disembarked into Fremantle, Western Australia
