A Forgotten Digger of The Great War and Sandgate Cemetery.
74 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 31st December 1945, Private John Gunther, 30th Battalion, wharf labourer of Edward Street, Kurri Kurri, New South Wales and 13 MacCullam Lane, off Church Street, Newcastle, N.S.W. and 35 Villiers Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 57. ANGLICAN 2-125. 40.

Born at Merewether (Glebeland), New South Wales on the 2nd October 1888 to William and Charlotte Gunther; husband of Emily Mary Gunther nee Miller (married 1920, Chatswood, N.S.W., died 1933 - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article136676605), John enlisted July 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Suffered from fibrositis April 1916, appendicitis May 1916, John was invalided home September 1917.
His name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Free Gardeners'-Pansy Lodge G.U.O.O.F. Roll of Honour (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article138833399, location unknown) and the Newcastle Wharf Labourers Union Roll of Honor (photo, unveiled date unknown, was on display at the Newcastle Maritime Museum).
Name not inscribed on the Kurri Kurri War Memorial.
Mr Gunther had been resting in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so I have placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite November 2017, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
