Harrold left Australia on the Karmala on 7 February 1917 arriving at Suez on 11 March and proceeded to Cookery School at Ismailia, Egypt on 12 June. On 23 June he was hospitalised with tonsillitis for a week. While serving in Egypt Harrold was hospitalised twice with eczema / psoriasis in 1918 and was admitted to hospital at Moascar with rheumatism from 30 December to 17 January 1919. He returned to Australia on the Malta from Kantara, Egypt on 8 July and was discharged on 18 September.
