WILLIAM TOPE was born at Camberwell, Victoria, on 11th October, 1892, the son of Mr. William Charles Tope and Mrs. Alexandrina Mary Tope (nee Tayler). He was educated at Hawthorn College, Melbourne, and joined the Bank’s Melbourne staff on 4th July, 1910. He was transferred to Hobart as ledger-keeper in November, 1913, and in the following April to Launceston.
William Tope enlisted on 18th August, 1914, and was a member of the 12th Battalion, 3rd Brigade, A.I.F. He served in Egypt from December, 1914, until March, and was in the Landing at Gallipoli on 25th April. He remained on the Peninsula in active service until 25th November having been promoted to corporal on 1st June. Returning to Egypt, he was promoted to sergeant on 1st March, 1916, and served until the 4th June. Then he went on to France, and was in action at Pozieres. Mouquet Farm, and Fleurbaix, winning promotion to lieutenant on 22nd August, 1916.
