GOULD, Wilfred 3690 47th Battalion, 10th Reinforcement
Wilfred Gould, was born at Guernsey, Channel islands in 1885 the son of Randolph Samuel and Margaret Amelia Gould. Wilfred served 2 years in the Guernsey Royal Milita which was compulsory for every male inhabitant between the ages of sixteen and sixty.
Wilfred immigrated to Brisbane in 1907 on-board the “Ormuz”. By 1913, 28 years old Wilfred was living at Home Creek and working as a Farmer. His brothers Albert & Leslie arrived in Brisbane in 1912. I wonder if they ever managed to meet.
On 15 May 1917 Wilfred travelled to Maryborough where he enlisted in the AIF and was assigned to 47th Battalion, 10th Reinforcement. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A28 Miltiades on 2 August 1917.
Whilst serving in France Wilfred was Killed by machine gun fire during an attack on Mont St Quentin on 2 September 1918. Wilfred Gould was buried at what is now Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension and a photo was taken in February 1919 of six crosses, four of which have plaques in the shape of Australia, marking the graves of soldiers of the 25th Battalion killed in action on 2 September 1918.
From left to right the graves are those of 3657, Private (Pte) John William Thompson; 6871, Pte James Crichton Stewart; 5406, Pte Alfred Solomon Smith; 385, Sergeant William Henry Hartnup, MM; 3690, Pte Wilfred John Gould; 3593, Pte John Loftus Bergin. Note an unidentified soldier is marked on the same cross as Pte Smith and an unknown soldier is marked on the same cross as Pte Gould. All are now interred at Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension.
