Son of Edward Gurr Verey and Catherine Verey nee Newby of Military Road, Guilford, NSW. Brother of Edward Hopton who returned to Australia on 20 April 1919 having served with the 5th Field Artillery Brigade

Commenced return to Australia on 8 November 1918 aboard HT Gaika disembarking on 29 December 1918 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney, NSW

During 1924c James married Winifred M. Willis in Sydney, NSW
