Died on this date – 16th October…… Anthony Austin Street was born at Double Bay, Sydney, NSW on 19th April, 1898.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on10th December, 1917 as a 19 year old, single Clerk from Elizabeth Bay, Sydney, NSW. Anthony Street stated on his Attestation Papers that he had served with Senior Cadets for 4 years & NSW Scouts for 1 ½ years (still serving).

As Anthony Austin Street was under the age of 21 his parents were required to sign their consent for their son to enlist. On 10th December, 1917 J. W. Street & Mary Veronica Street signed their consent – “We hereby give our consent to the enlisting of our son Anthony Austin Street 19 yrs age, for Active Service in the Australian Imperial Forces.”

Gunner Anthony Austin Street, Service number 63787, embarked from Sydney, NSW on RMS Orontes for Active Service on 5th June, 1918 with the Field Artillery, 35th Reinforcements. He was admitted to Ship’s Hospital on 25th June, 1918 with Tonsillitis & discharged from Ship’s Hospital on 4th July, 1918. Gunner Street disembarked from RMS Orontes at Liverpool, England on 11th August, 1918.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.
He was marched in to R.B.A.A. (Reserve Brigade Australia Artillery) at Heytesbury, Wiltshire, England on 12th August, 1918 from Australia.

On 9th October, 1918 Gunner Street was sent sick to Sutton Veny Hospital, Wiltshire with Influenza. He was reported as seriously ill – cause N.Y.D. (not yet determined) on 12th October, 1918.

The Hospital Admissions form recorded that Gunner Anthony Austin Street was admitted to Group Clearing Hospital, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 10th October, 1918 with “Pneumonia?” He was transferred to Military Hospital at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 12th October, 1918 & was reported as seriously ill – cause N.Y.D. (not yet determined).

Gunner Anthony Austin Street died on 16th October, 1918 at Military Hospital, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England from Influenza Pneumonia. A telegram to Administrative Headquarters, A.I.F. London, from Commanding Officer, Military Hospital, Sutton Veny advised of the death of Gunner Anthony Austin Street & also mentioned that his brother Major Street was present and approved a Post Mortem.

He was buried in London Road Cemetery, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England where 8 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
