Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Arthur Nicholls was the son of Frederick and Fanny Nicholls, of Maryborough, Queensland.

Arthur was in his 27th year and was born and raised in Maryborough. He was educated at the Maryborough Central and Maryborough Boys’ Grammar Schools. He was reported to have been well-known in sporting circles, being for many years a member of the West End Football Club.

Arthur enlisted during September 1916, and left Brisbane with the 31st Battalion a few months later. On arrival in England, he was drafted into the 47th Battalion. He joined the unit at the front-line during July 1917. He was severely wounded in the throat on 27 March 1918, when the 47th Battalion withstood a heavy attack by German storm troops at Dernancourt, France. He died the next day in a Stationery Hospital at Doullens, France.
