Died on this date – 12th January.... Private John Francis Vaughan Scheibel was born at Windeyer, near Mudgee, New South Wales in 1893. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 2nd November, 1915 as a 23 year old Telephonist from Manly, New South Wales.

Private Scheibel embarked from Sydney on SS Makarini on 1st April, 1916 with 4th Infantry Battalion, 16th Reinforcements & disembarked at Suez, Egypt on 1st May, 1916.

Private Scheibel was transferred to School of Signalling at Bulford, Wiltshire on 1st August, 1916 then taken on strength at Artillery Training Depot from 1st Training Battalion on 2nd August, 1916.
(No record was been made as to how & when Private John Scheibel arrived in England.)

Private John Scheibel was marched out to Weymouth Signalling School on 28th October, 1916 & admitted to Hospital at Perham Downs, England on 28th November, 1916. He was marched in to Larkhill, Wiltshire on 11th December, 1916.

Private Scheibel was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire with Influenza on 8th January, 1917. He was reported seriously ill with Pneumonia on 9th January, 1917.

Private John Francis Vaughan Scheibel died at 11.30 a.m. on 12th January, 1917 at Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire from Broncho Pneumonia. He was buried in Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
