Private James Francis Fellows (Service Nos:V503452/VX146588) initially served in the ACMF with 1 Machine Gun Training Battalion (2 November 1942 - 12 September 1943), and was 'in the field' at Cowra, New South Wales on 13 September 1943 when he enlisted in the AIF. Private Fellows attended Jungle Warfare Training Centre Cowra, and was attached to 30 Infantry Battalion on 11 November 1944 when he embarked with his Unit from Cairns for Aitape on board USAT Mexico. Private Fellows served in New Guinea with 29/46 Battalion, and was attached to 2/7th Battalion on 1 June 1946 when he embarked from Rabaul for Sydney. Private Fellows was attached to 2nd/7th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 31 December 1946. Older brothers Charlie and Ernest also served in WWII.
Youngest of twelve children, James was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1924 to Edward Forrest Fellows (b1876 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Rachel (Dolly) Marion Beecroft (b1884 in Melbourne, Victoria). Edward and Dolly married in 1903 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and Edward was a Driver.
James was working in Melbourne as a Glass Beveller in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army. In 1946 in Melbourne he married Doreen Veronica Wickham (b1927 in Melbourne, Victoria). James and Doreen settled in Melbourne, where they raised their fmaily and James was a Carpenter. Doreen died in 1996 and James in 2000.
