Son of Daniel J. O'Brien and Eliza M. Smith formerly O'Brien of Oxford Street, Woollahra, NSW
Commenced return to Australia on 11 April 1916, first time, aboard HT Runic disembarking on 14 May 1916
On 15 August 1918 Daniel suffered a gunshot wound to the right hand which was considered to be caused negligence. Invalided to England on 19 August 1918.
Commenced return to Australia on 20 November 1918, second time, aboard HT Suevic disembarking on 6 January 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney
