John, Brenke was born in Wolkowiskai, Russia in the year 1888. Before the war he lived with both his parents in Gumeracha, South Australia living the east side of the city (CBD). He worked as a labourer before the war and was a Roman Catholic. He was single before he enlisted and was 27 years old.

He enlisted in on the 8th of June 1915 into the 10th Battalion as the 9th Reinforcement when he was 27 years old. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A15 Star Of England on 21 September 1915. He was Wounded in Fleurbaix in the Fromelles sectoron on the 25 June 1916 and was mortally wounded in Pozieres, France on the 16 August 1916. He later passed away 7 days later from a wound in his upper thigh. 

His family later received a compensation for his death in the war.
