Parents: - Richard Matthews and Mary Jane Bythell (married 22nd March 1877 inWandiligong, Victoria), of Myrtleford, Victoria.

Court of Enquiry, held in the field, on 4th August 1917, pronounced Private James Matthews fate as 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916' (Battle of Fromelles)

Private James Edward Matthews (3174) was one of four first cousins living in the Myrtleford district killed during World War 1. He is "Remembered with Honour" at V.C. Corner, Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles. James attended Myrtleford State School 955. His death is recorded on honour boards at the Uniting Church, the school honour board and at the Soldier's memoral Square. A memorial window at the church includes names of the four cousins.
