Biography

Eldrid Anton ENGLERT was the third child and second son of George and Elizabeth Englert. He was born in January 1894 at Quirindi, NSW. The family moved to Tamworth, NSW, by 1896, and to Manilla, NSW, by 1905. In 1912 the Englerts moved to Drummoyne, NSW.

In 1916, Eldrid enlisted in World War One at the same time as his older brother Bertie.

Eldrid was a private attached to the 1 Anzac Cyclist Battalion, was stationed at Parkhouse military camp and Chiseldon in England, and served in France at Boulogne and Abbeville, close to where his brother was killed by a bomb in Allonville in May 1918.

Eldrid spent considerable time in and out of hospital throughout 1918. When the war ended he was returned home aboard the HMAT Morvada with Australia's sick and injured soldiers. He had influenza and pneumonia. Eldrid was discharged as an invalid. He was awarded the 1915-1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his service.

In 1920 Eldrid married Hannah May Hutley at Drummoyne. They had one child, born in 1921, and two grandchildren born in 1950 and 1952. Eldrid was residing at 122 Kings Road Five Dock, NSW, when he passed away on 6 May 1953.
