Private Herbert Carl Hughan (Service Nos:7559/NX56309) served in the AIF in WWI, enlisting with 1st Depot Battalion on 19 February 1917, having given an incorrect age - he was seventeen years of age, not eighteen years and one month. Private Hughan was attached to 13th Infantry Battalion on 10 May 1917 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Devonport on board HMAT A74 Marathon. Private Hughan served in France, and was attached to 34th Infantry Battalion in 1918 when his DoB was confirmed. On 15 January 1919 Private Hughan embarked from England for Sydney on board HT City of Exeter, and was attached to 1st Casualty Clearing Station at Discharge on 29 March 1919. In WWII, Private Hughan enlisted in the AIF on 4 July 1940 with 5th Battalion, and served in the Middle East and New Guinea. Private Hughan was attached to 1st Australian Army Postal Unit at Discharge on 30 September 1944 (Medically Unfit).
Hubert was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1900 to Lillian Elizabeth Cahill (b1874 in Sydney, New South Wales). Prior to Hubert's birth, Lillian had been living with the Hughan family, who adopted Hubert (Lillian married Henry William Shipp in June that year.
Hubert started work as a Telegraph Boy with the Postmaster Generals Department, and was a Telephonist in Katoomba in 1917 when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge, Hubert returned to Sydney, working as a Telegraph Boy before being appointed Postman. In 1925 Hubert married Ethel Grace Burnett (b1902 in Portsmouth, England) - Ethel immigrated in 1916, arriving in Sydney on board the Canberra. Hubert and Ethel settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Hubert worked as a Postman, Labourer and Clerk. Hubert died in 1959 and Ethel in 1977. In the 1950s, Hubert wrote to the Army requesting his campaign medals, and for them to be issued in his birth name of Cahill (NAA).
