James was the youngest of nine children of James Frank Barr (born 1842 in Sydney, NSW) and Mary Jane Bozier (born 1855 in Coomera, QLD). James Snr and Mary married in Mudgeereba, QLD in 1874 and raised their family in Coomera, QLD where James Snr was a Farmer.
James started work as a Motor Driver in Coomera, QLD and had moved to Brisbane by 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF in September 1916. He served initially with 49 Battalion 8th Reinforcements and then with the 2nd Machine Gun Battalion as a Private (Service No: 3115). James was Gassed in France in 1918, and died of Bronchial Pneumonia in Belgium in December 1919
