Frederick’s biography

Frederick Lloyd Martens (service number 1027), the son of William Martens and Honorah Keily, was born in Crystal Brook, South Australia in 1896. Before the war he was a labourer working as a horse driver, this is how he got his place in the 10th Light Horse Regiment in the Australian Imperial Force.

He enlisted on the 20th of January 1915 as a private and first embarked upon his trip from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board HMAT A63 Karoola on 25 June 1915. Before he had set out on this journey he had training at Black Boy Hill in Western Australia which then led towards him training in Egypt like many others.

Within the short time he was in action there he fell sick on 10/10/15 and was sent to hospital soon after. On 28/11/15 he had caught a dreadful case of mumps meaning he was unfit to perform and was transferred to the 4th Auxiliary Hospital.

On 18/9/16 he was sent back into the field in the 10th Light Horse Regiment unfortunately to be sent back 2 days later sent to another hospital on the 20/9/16 whilst attacking received a bullet wound to his left leg damaging his tibia and was transferred to the 31st gen hospital in kantarra in Cairo. His x rays had shown that there was bone damage meaning it would take time to heal which it did well with a side effect of stiffening up every now and then.

After the trauma of his leg he was then sent to the 31st Australian General Hospital on 20/11/16 for being dangerously ill. On 22/1/17 he was to be sent back to Australia because of his wound which was stiffening up and causing much stress on his contribution to war. A few days later on 29/1/17 the Euripides ship was to be his use of transport to go home to Australia for his leg wound and then after being fully recovered be reunited with his family.

Frederick Lloyd Martens married Frieda May Spencer after returning from war and died at age 69 in 1964.
