Biography contributed by Robert Johnson

Frank Eggleston was born Francis Harker Eggleston in Merritts Creek in Queensland.  He enlisted in the First AIF on 19 March 1917 when he was 30 and living in Merredin, Western Australia where he was a railway worker.

He was posted on 23 March to the 10th Light Horse Regiment and on 27 April to the Imperial Camel Corps.  He embarked from Fremantle on 22 May and arrived in Suez on 20 June.  He joined No. 1 Company of the Camel Corps on 6 September.

On 2 February 1918, Frank left a parade in Rafah without permission which cost him 14 days confined to barracks.  Two months later he refused to obey an order in the field which cost him another 14 days CB.

From May to July he spent time in several hospitals in Gaza, Abbassia and Kantara with a rheumatoid debility.

On 2 August 1918 he was transferred back to the 10th Light Horse Regiment and on 1 November he again was admitted to hospital where he remained for four weeks, during which time he received the news that the war was over.

Frank was transferred to a convalescent depot on 28 November where he spent Christmas and he returned to his unit on 30 December 1918.

Trooper Eggleston left the Middle East and arrived home in Fremantle on 9 August 1919. He was living in Victoria Park, a suburb of Perth, when he died on 21 April 1961 aged 75.  His son, Frank Joe Eggleston, served with No. 466 Squadron RAAF during WW2.
