Gunner Ronald Stephen Smith (Service No:TX1315) enlisted in the Australian Army on 23 April 1940 and was a Private attached to 2/12th Infantry Battalion when he embarked from Melbourne on 20 June 1940, bound for Liverpool on board the Dominion Republic. Gunner Smith served with 2/15th Infantry Battalion and was attached to 3 Anti Tank Regiment when he was Discharged on 24 June 1946.

Born in 1919 in Launceston Tasmania, Ron was the third of eleven children of Albert Montague Smith (b1894 in Oatlands, Tasmania) and Rose Ethel Cutler (b1893 at Evandale, Tasmania). Albert (a Labourer) and Rose married in 1916 in Launceston Tasmania - Albert had served in WWI (Private; Service No:1248 and was WiA). Albert and Rose lived in St Mary's, St Leonards and Launceston where they raised their family and Albert was a Labourer, Cleaner and Driver.

Ron worked as a Labourer in Launceston prior to his enlistment in 1940, and in 1943 in Launceston he married Constance Ellie Ewans (b1918 in Launceston, Tasmania) - Constance was a Textile Worker. In 1954 Ron was a Labourer in Melbourne when he married second wife Lillian Elma Hudson (b1932 in Melbourne, Victoria). Ron was aka Ronald Stevens and John Roberts. Ron died in 1985.
