ohn Gladstone POPE (Service Number 324) was born on 10th July 1887 at Woollahra. His career with the NSW Railways began in the Traffic Branch at Narrabri when he was a probationer from 14th May 1903. In September 1904 he became a junior porter but resigned in 1907. He did not return to railway employment until January 1914 when his job description is ‘operator’ in the Electrical Branch. He was a telegraph opeator. In May 1914 he relocated to Harden and was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces on 17th August 1914, immediately on the outbreak of the war.

Pope enlisted at Rosebery Park on 25th August. He gave his father living a Hamilton as his next of kin. He also claimed two weeks service with the 11th Light Horse! Allotted to the No. 1 Light Horse Regiment he embarked HMAT ‘Star of Victoria’ at Sydney on 20th October 1914. He embarked from Egypt for the Dardanelles in early April 1915. 

He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 26th May 1915 and buried in the New Monash Cemetery, on 27th May 1915, the Rev G Green officiating. The name of the cemetery was later changed to Shrapnel Valley Cemetery.
