Biography contributed

Biography submitted by the great niece of Hynes, Nicole Scott

Harold Ernest Hynes was born on the 13th of December, 1900 at Rawalpindi, India (now Pakistan) into an English military family. He was the second son and third of six children to John and Emily Blanche Hynes (formerly King). His father John served in the Dragoons as a Lance-Sergeant. Harold’s grandfather Francis was also in the army for over twenty years and served as a volunteer Drill Sergeant in the Lancaster Rifle Volunteers.

Harold was Baptised on the 24th of March, 1901 in the Church of England at Rawal Pindi, Bengal, India.

His family moved to a farm in Tongala, Australia in June 1913. The family moved to Melbourne towards the end of 1915. His father John was a member of the Instructional Staff upon discharge on the15/05/1917 and the family lived in St Kilda and then Burnley.

Harold enlisted on the 14th of November, 1916 and as he was under 21, supposedly his father and mother signed approval of his enlistment.

Harold who was a labourer travelled on the HMAT Nestor on the 21/11/1917 and served in the 24th Battalion as a Private with Service Number 6814.

It was noted in a letter dated 10th of May, 1918 that Harold was only 17 years and 5 months of age due to advice received from his mother. It states that

“As this soldier has not yet served with his Unit in the Field, and moreover has made a false statement on his attestation, he will forfeit all pay not drawn by him for the period prior to his date of discharge and will be removed from the pay roll from the 6/5/18.”

Harold made a Statutory Declaration agreeing with the advice received from his mother declaring that he was “under age”. He was returned to Australia HT Essex and was discharged 03/08/1918.

Harold became involved in the Merchant Marines and travelled to the USA to be a part of the Seamen’s Union. He was killed fighting in Spain in 1937.
