David Todd was born in Castlemaine, Victoria on 20.11.1898 to David Marrs Todd and Margaret (née Baxter). He was a clerk, living in Gingell St Castlemaine, when he enlisted in the AIF on 6.4.1916 at the age of 18 years and 4 months. He had served 4 years as a Junior Cadet and 1 year in the Senior Cadets. He was described as being 5 feet 8 ¾ inches tall, with a fresh complexion, grey eyes and black hair. He belonged to the Church of England.
His service record contains many references to promotions and reverting to ranks and he was transferred between England and France on multiple occasions between 1916 and the end of the war.
On 26.4.1916 he was transferred from the 19th Depot Battalion, Geelong to Castlemaine. He was appointed acting Corporal on 1.8.16, then acting sergeant on 22.9.16, reverting to ranks on 16.11.16. On the 30.12.16 travelled on the Princess Clementine to France.
During the next year, he spent time as acting Corporal or Sergeant until the 22.6.17 when he was appointed Lance Corporal, then Corporal on 10.8.17. On the 12.10.17 he was appointed Sergeant.
An accidental burn to his wrist on 24.12.17 is noted on his record and he embarked on the Nestor A 71 for Folkstone, England on 25.12.17 , his record noting that Lance Corporal of the 59th Battalion was transferred to England.
On 24.4.1918 he faced a disciplinary charge for neglect of duty, in that he did not lock prisoners confined in the guard room, in the cells as laid down in orders.
He proceeded to France on 15.5.1918, and on the 21.5.18 to return to his unit and rejoined them on 7.6.18.
He again returned to England on 22.7.18 to join the Officers Cadet Battalion as a supernumery. On the 23.7.18 he was transferred to Australian Corps HQ to attend an Infantry Cadet Course.
On 3.1.19 he is recorded as a sergeant, then to be second lieutenant on probation. On the 3.4.19 he was appointed lieutenant. On 2.8.19, he left Liverpool to return to Australia on the Argyllshire, disembarking on the 22.9.19.
His appointment was terminated on the 6.11.19, although his record states that on the 1.1.20 he was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, 59th Battalion, B Company.
In 1922 he was working as a clerk and living in Templeton St, Castlemaine with his parents.
In 1923 he married Williamina McBeath Ferguson.
The Voter lists of 1939, 1941 and 1946 show him working as a clerk and living in Berkley St Castlemaine with Williamina
David died on the 17 January 1969 in Richmond, Victoria.
