An Original Anzac who served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

94 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 12th July 1929, Private Frederick John James McCallum Must, 4th Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-1309), labourer from Sulphide Street, Broken Hill, New South Wales and 9 Oliver Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 45. ANGLICAN 2-142. 79. Not married.

Born at Port Adelaide, South Australia 1884 to Frederick Charles and Marianne (Marrianna, Marion) Must nee Simons of 21 Swan Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, Fred enlisted on the 11th September 1914 with the 16th Battalion at Morphettville, South Australia.

Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on the 22nd December 1914.
Admitted to hospital 8.5.1915 (cellulitis, left arm), 27.8.1915 (influenza), 31.8.1815 (enteritis), 13.4.1917 (overlapping toe, hammer toe, callosity left foot).

Fred returned home on the 28th September 1918, being discharged medically unfit (synovitis left knee joint) on the 16th November 1918.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.

Mr. Must’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not located inscribed on any known Broken Hill War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Fred’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Younger brother Dudley Roy (born 1895? Broken Hill?, N.S.W., clerk from Sulphide Street, Broken Hill, New South Wales, enlisted 9.12.1914, 11th Australian Light Horse Regiment, Reg No-544, RTA, 22.1.1919, invalided, died 28.6.1976, Cessnock, New South Wales, age 81.
