Born in Perth, WA in 1921, Robert was the eldest of two children of Ernest Anton Pedder (b1874 in Hahndorf, South Australia) and his second wife Louisa Agnes Philpot (b1891 in Portland, Victoria). Ernest (a Travelling Salesman) had enlisted in the AIF on 6 September 1916, and was in Melbourne in 1917 when he was Discharged as Medically Unfit. Ernest and Louisa (a Dressmaker in Melbourne) married in Adelaide, South Australia in 1918, and moved to Perth, WA where they raised their family and Ernest was a Salesman for Ibis (South Australia) Shoe Company and a member of the Commercial Travellers' Association of WA. Following Ernest's death in 1924, Louisa and her two sons returned to Victoria, where she remarried.
