Private Horace Hector John Gribble (Service No: W3887) enlisted in the ACMF on 28 February 1942. He was attached to 29 Garrison Battalion when he Discharged to enlist in the AIF on 21 April 1942 (Corporal; Service No:WX21583). Corporal Gribble served in New Guinea (4 February 1945 to 4 September 1945). He was attached to 2/3 Australian Canteen Depot, 17 Coy ASC and 161 and 132 General Transport Coys throughout his service. Corporal Gribble Discharged on 4 December 1945.
Born in 1902 in Midland Junction WA, Horace was the eldest child of Robert John Gribble (b1875 in Perth, WA) and Edith Danes (b1879 in Yorkshire, England) - Edith emigrated with her parents and siblings in 1883, arriving in Sydney NSW on board the Cardigan Castle and moved to WA in the late 1890s. Robert (a Labourer) and Edith married in 1900 in Perth WA, and following Robert's death in 1925, Edith remarried.
Horace started work at fifteen years of age in the WAGR Midland Workshops as a Junior Labourer with the Locomotives Branch. In 1923 he married Mary Halliday Francis (b1902 in Glasgow, Scotland) - Mary had arrived in Fremantle WA in 1913 with her parents and siblings on board the Belgic and the family settled in Midland Junction. Following their marriage, Horace and Mary moved to Melbourne, Victoria where Horace worked as a Motor Trimmer before returning to Midland Junction WA in 1929, where Mary died. Horace then lived with his mother in Midland Junction, where he worked as a Motor Trimmer before relocating to Goomalling WA in the mid 1930s. Horace worked as a Saddler and General Agent in Goomalling. In 1944 he married Margaret Sophia Stone (b1911 in Meeniyan, Victoria) - Margaret had moved to Toodyay WA with her parents and by 1925 was working as a Domestic Servant before becoming a Nurse at the Goomalling Hospital in the early 1930s.
Horace and Margaret moved to North QLD in the early 1950s and settled at Green Springs in Wondecai, Herberton where Horace worked as a Masseur until his death in 1972. Margaret died in 1979.
