Son of James Thomas Hawes and Jane Hawes of 'Toorooka', Macleay River, NSW. Brother of Albert Harold Hawes who returned to Australia on 25 April 1919 having served with the 20th Battalion
Commenced return to Australia on 27 July 1917 aboard HT Demosthenes disembarking on 24 September 1917 at Melbourne then transhipped to Sydney arriving on 27 September 1919
