Private Charles Henry Newman (Service No:WX39045) initially served with the ACMF (Private; Service No:W38978) from 13 April 1942 to 21 March 1943 - 19 Garrison Battalion WA. Private Newman enlisted in the AIF on 22 March 1943 and served with 11th Infantry Battalion in Darwin, NT (15 September 1943 - 29 February 1944 and 30 April 1944 - 25 November 1944). From Darwin he embarked for Rabaul, returning to Brisbane on 29 January 1946 on board Taos Victory. Private Newman Discharged on 13 February 1946. Siblings Jack and Bob also served in WWII.

Born in 1923 in Ballidu WA, Charles was the third of four children of John Newman Snr (b1872 in Moama, NSW) and Maria Lawrence (nee Gittens; b1883 in York, WA). John worked in Perth as a Kitchenman in the early 1900s, and was at Canning Mills in Kalamunda in 1913 when he and Maria married in Midland. John and Maria lived in Canning Mills, Dumbleyung and Ballidu before settling at Dalwalinu - John worked as a Horse Driver and Labourer. John and Mary retired to Perth in the 1940s.

Charles worked as a Farm Hand at Xantippe via Dalwalinu before enlisting in the Army and worked at Balidu, WA as a Manager following his Discharge. In 1950 in Perth WA, Charles married Emily May Stone (b1931 in Cunderdin, WA). In the 1950s, Charles and Emily lived in Cunderdin and Kellerberrin where Charles was a Carrier before moving to Perth in the early 1960s where Charles worked as a Gardener. By 1968 Charles and Emily had moved to Wanneroo where Charles was a Truck Driver. Charles died in 1994 and Emily in 1999.
